Charis Academy's Renewal
The Foundation
For more than 40 years, Charis Academy—formerly Immanuel Christian School—has served families in Hazleton with a commitment to Christ-centered education, character formation, and academic growth. Founded in 1979, the school became a place where students were known, cared for, challenged, and encouraged to pursue the life God created them to live.
But the vision was always bigger than simply operating a school.
The deeper calling was to help shape lives, strengthen families, and become a light within the city through education rooted in grace, truth, and purpose. Over time, that vision continued to grow into what is now becoming a broader Future Ready movement and Institutional Movement Architecture (IMA): an integrated model connecting faith, academics, leadership, workforce readiness, community impact, entrepreneurship, and long-term transformation.
The Challenge
Like many mission-driven schools serving underserved communities, the journey was not without difficulty.
By the end of 2024, Charis Academy faced one of the most challenging moments in its history. Financial pressures, operational realities, and the complexity of serving a diverse and economically pressured region placed the future of the school into uncertainty.
But the challenge also revealed something deeper—the community still believed the mission mattered.
Families, staff, supporters, and leaders recognized that Hazleton did not need fewer places of hope and formation. It needed institutions willing to renew, adapt, and continue investing in the next generation.
The moment became more than a survival question. It became a defining opportunity to clarify identity, strengthen the foundation, and reimagine the future.
The Renewal
In January 2025, the school reopened with renewed vision, renewed leadership alignment, and renewed commitment to the city and its families.
The transition from Immanuel Christian School to Charis Academy marked more than a name change. It represented a renewed institutional identity centered on grace, future readiness, community impact, and long-term transformation. The word Charis—meaning grace—reflects the school’s desire to create a grace-filled environment where students are equipped academically, spiritually, relationally, and practically for the future.
Today, Charis Academy is continuing to build a future-ready model rooted in five strategic initiatives:
